Project Description
The many shuttered, gilded entertainment centers of a previous era- movie theaters, provide a starting point for this project. The number of closed theaters in San Francisco is up to almost twenty forming a network of voids within the city ripe for reinvention. While a few of these spaces have plans for redevelopment into gyms, theater bars, performances spaces and community centers, many of them sit empty. Meanwhile, SFMOMA’s expansion and related 3-year closure from 2013 to 2016 provides a programmatic
anchor for this project.
This exhibit will be open for six month at the Strand Theater, located in Mid-Market and right across U.N.Plaza. Membrane structure is proposed for this exhibition due to its flexibility, translucency and lightweight nature. The assigned programs are works from the SFMOMA permanent collection, artist lectures, POPOS (privately owned public spaces), public restrooms and Cafe.

This exhibition is about the transition of light and anticipation. The strategy of this project comes from Bernard Tschumi’s idea of 3 ways that concept, context and content may relate to each other, which is Conflict, Indifference and Reciprocity. Visitors will encounter 3 stages of experience here- seeing the art piece as an object, being with it as a 3D experience, and contending with these two.
The selection of artworks all play with the idea of flatness and volume in different ways. This exhibition includes four paintings, a sculpture and a video installation. At this exhibition, you will experience the illusions created by the distance. For each single piece of work, you get different perceptions by looking from far away and standing in front/in the middle of it (2D effect and 3D environment).
